FAST ultrasound

FAST ultrasound refers to an ultrasound examination performed in FAST mode (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma). It is a dynamic imaging examination that uses ultrasound to assess possible internal injuries after trauma, in particular abdominal trauma. During a FAST ultrasound the clinician carries out a focused, rapid assessment of the internal organs in order to detect any bleeding or other damage caused by the injury. The examination usually covers four areas — the right subcostal area, the suprapubic area, the suprapubic area of the urinary bladder and the pelvic region.

FAST ultrasound is widely used in emergency medicine and traumatology, as it allows internal injuries to be assessed quickly and non-invasively after trauma. It is particularly useful when time is critical, for example after injuries or road traffic accidents. The results of a FAST ultrasound help clinicians decide on further treatment, such as surgery, blood transfusion or other medical interventions.
