Parasites: ticks and fleas
Ixodes ticks and fleas are parasites that can pose a health risk to our pets. Ixodes ticks can transmit toxoplasmosis (babesiosis), Lyme and Ehrlich tick-borne diseases, causing anemia and general toxic poisoning in dogs. Fleas, on the other hand, cause dermatitis, severe itching and can sometimes be a source of tapeworm infection (heartworm disease).
To protect animals from these parasites, they need to be treated regularly with special medications. But what to choose – withers drops, spray or collar?
Withers drops are the most popular and convenient way to protect against ticks and fleas. They are applied to the skin in the withers and work for a month. The drops are well absorbed through the skin, spread throughout the animal’s body and provide reliable protection.
Sprays can also be used to protect against parasites. They work immediately after application and can be effective for several days. Sprays are best for large animals or when you need quick protection.
Anti-parasite collars can also be effective in protecting against parasites. They are usually worn for several months and provide continuous protection around the animal’s neck.
For greater reliability, you can combine drops and spray or drops and collar. The most important thing is that the active ingredient in them is from different groups to avoid overdosing.
As for fleas, regular treatment of animals and their housing with special preparations is necessary to combat them. Remember that fleas can hide in various places, including carpets, skirting boards and crevices.
In addition to treating your pet, it is also important to maintain hygiene in your home, regularly cleaning and caring for places where fleas and ticks can hide – carpets, furniture, pillows, blankets, etc.
Flea collars, drops, and sprays are an effective protection against fleas and ticks. However, before using them, read the instructions and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is also critical to remember that not all products are suitable for all animals, and are not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs.
Prevention is one of the most significant aspects of parasite control. Regular grooming, keeping the house clean, and taking care of the places where your pet spends time will help reduce the risk of parasite infection and protect your pet from unpleasant consequences.
After all, a tick or flea bite can have serious consequences for your pet’s health. Therefore, it is important to be attentive and take care of your pet, treat it for parasites, follow good hygiene practices, and have it regularly checked by a veterinarian.
