Parasites, both external (e.g. fleas, ticks) and internal (e.g. roundworms, tapeworms), can cause dangerous diseases and considerable discomfort to pets. Extremely common in our environment, ticks cause the life-threatening disease babesiosis and the slightly less common brucellosis. Babesiosis causes the breakdown of red blood cells leading to severe anaemia and liver and kidney damage. The disease progresses rapidly and, without appropriate treatment, leads to the death of the patient. Internal parasites, such as roundworms and tapeworms, inhabit the digestive tract of animals. They can lead to diarrhoea, vomiting, cachexia, anaemia, poisoning and, in extreme cases, death. Many of these parasites are zoonotic, meaning that humans can contract them from animals. These parasites are common in the environment and every animal is exposed to them. It is therefore advisable to regularly apply either a preventative or a parasitic infection control product.
